From Divemaster to SSI Instructor: Your Next Step at Oceans 5 Gili Air

Completing your Divemaster internship is an exciting achievement—but for many international graduates at Oceans 5 Gili Air, it is just the beginning. Most continue their education with our SSI Instructor Training Course, building on their experience to become confident diving instructors.

As an SSI Instructor Training Center, Oceans 5 offers a clear pathway from your first professional qualification to teaching your own students. Your Divemaster internship builds the foundation; instructor training helps you take the next step.

Why continue to instructor level?

Your Divemaster internship develops your diving skills, leadership and confidence. Instructor training takes those foundations further: you learn to explain diving theory, teach practical skills, assess students and help new divers become safe, responsible divers.

Continuing at Oceans 5 means training with a team you already know. You can build on the experience gained during your internship while preparing for the responsibilities of teaching.

Working in Indonesia as an international dive professional

For international candidates hoping to work in Indonesia, progressing to instructor level is particularly relevant. A Divemaster qualification alone should not be viewed as a route to legal employment here.

Becoming a diving instructor can open opportunities with dive centres able to sponsor eligible foreign staff. Any position remains subject to the required employment and immigration approvals.

Instructor certification does not automatically give you permission to work. The necessary authorisations must be arranged separately with your employer before you start employment.

How to become an SSI Instructor

  1. Complete your Divemaster training

Develop your dive leadership, rescue skills and diving theory, and gain experience assisting instructors. Already qualified through another recognised agency? Contact our team to check your entry requirements.

  2. Plan your next step with our team

We review your certifications, logged dives, medical documentation and first-aid qualifications. Together, we identify any remaining requirements and select a suitable ITC date.

  3. Prepare for your ITC

Complete your assigned digital learning and refresh your diving theory and practical skills. Planning early gives you time to build experience and meet the course requirements before training begins.

  4. Complete your training and evaluation

Develop your teaching skills through classroom, pool and ocean sessions with our Instructor Trainers. After successfully completing your ITC and meeting the evaluation requirements, take the SSI Instructor Evaluation to qualify as an SSI Open Water Instructor.

SSI lists a Divemaster qualification or equivalent and at least 75 logged dives totalling 50 hours among its ITC entry requirements. At least 100 dives totalling 65 hours are required before the Instructor Evaluation. Our team will confirm the complete, current requirements for your chosen course.

Support for your diving career

Many Oceans 5 graduates have found work on the Gili Islands and elsewhere in Indonesia. Others take their qualifications overseas and build their careers in different diving destinations.

Our connections with dive centres in other countries can help you explore opportunities beyond Indonesia. We offer guidance, share relevant vacancies and make introductions where suitable opportunities exist. Employment depends on available positions, your experience and the requirements of each destination.
