Duration: 5 days
Course price: IDR 9,000,000
Package: Five SSI specialty instructor ratings
Five SSI Specialty Instructor Ratings
Our package combines four diving specialties with one Ecology Specialty of your choice. Each adds to your ability to support divers beyond their initial certification.
Drift Diving
Develop your approach to teaching divers how to plan and conduct dives in currents. Practise explaining drift-diving procedures, organising clear briefings and managing buddy teams throughout the dive.
One Ecology Specialty of Your Choice
Choose one available SSI Ecology Specialty that matches your interests. Expand your understanding of marine life or marine ecosystems and learn how to share that knowledge with your students.
Our team will help you choose from the available ecology options before your training begins.
Deep Diving
Prepare to teach the knowledge and procedures needed for deeper recreational diving. Focus on dive planning, gas management, diver awareness and explaining the considerations involved in deep dives.
Navigation
Develop your ability to teach compass navigation and the use of natural underwater references. Learn how to organise practical exercises that help students become more confident in finding their way underwater.
Night Diving
Prepare to teach the SSI Night & Limited Visibility specialty. Focus on dive preparation, light signals, buddy contact, orientation and managing students when visibility is reduced.
Specialty instructor ratings are awarded after successful completion of the applicable SSI training and assessment requirements.
Build Confidence in Your Teaching
Becoming an Open Water Instructor is an important milestone. Continuing your training helps you develop more ways to teach and gives your students additional opportunities to progress.
During this package, you will practise explaining specialty concepts, preparing training sessions and adapting your approach to different student needs. Feedback from our instructor development team helps you improve your presentations and teaching decisions.
The aim is to develop both your specialty knowledge and your confidence in delivering clear, organised training.
Working Towards SSI Divemaster Instructor Recognition
The five-day specialty instructor package supports your development towards DMI recognition. Completing the package does not automatically award the SSI Divemaster Instructor rating.
Required Instructor Ratings
To qualify for SSI Divemaster Instructor recognition, you must hold the following active instructor ratings:
- Open Water Instructor
- Deep Diving Instructor
- Dive Guide Instructor
- Diver Stress & Rescue Instructor
- Navigation Instructor
- Night & Limited Visibility Instructor
Deep Diving, Navigation and Night & Limited Visibility address specific DMI requirements. Drift Diving and your chosen Ecology Specialty further expand your teaching portfolio.
Required Teaching Experience
You must have issued at least 25 certifications from recreational scuba programs, with introductory and partial entry-level programs counted using SSI’s credit rules below.
This requirement recognises your experience in training divers. Your existing qualifying certifications can contribute towards the total.
How Introductory Programs Count
Completed Try Scuba, Basic Diver, Referral Diver and Scuba Diver programs can contribute towards the certification requirement. SSI uses the following equivalents:
| Completed programs | Certification credit |
|---|---|
| 12 Try Scuba recognition cards | 1 Open Water Diver certification |
| 6 Basic Diver certifications | 1 Open Water Diver certification |
| 2 Referral Diver certifications | 1 Open Water Diver certification |
| 2 Scuba Diver certifications | 1 Open Water Diver certification |
For example, six completed Basic Diver certifications contribute one certification credit towards the required total.
Before your course, our team will review your existing instructor ratings and certification record. Together, we will identify which requirements you already meet and what remains to be completed.
Receiving Your DMI Recognition
Once all prerequisites are fulfilled and updated in your MySSI profile, SSI automatically issues your free Divemaster Instructor digital recognition card.
The recognition card is separate from the paid specialty instructor training package. Your course fee covers the training package described on this page.
Gain Practical Teaching Experience
Additional qualifications give you more courses to teach. Applying those skills with students is another important part of developing as an instructor.
If you would like to gain further experience after the five-day package, speak with our team about mentoring and course-assisting opportunities. Availability depends on student bookings, the dive centre’s schedule and your qualifications.
The five-day package does not guarantee 25 qualifying certifications during your stay. Your progress towards DMI recognition depends on your existing certification record and the requirements you still need to meet.
Train at Oceans 5 Gili Air
Continue your professional development within an active dive centre in the Gili Islands. Training alongside experienced instructors gives you opportunities to discuss student development, course organisation and the everyday responsibilities of a dive professional.
Your chosen Ecology Specialty adds another dimension to your teaching. It helps you connect diving education with an understanding of marine life and encourages students to become more aware of the underwater environment.
Who Can Join?
This package is designed for qualified SSI Open Water Instructors who want to gain additional specialty instructor ratings and progress towards DMI recognition.
Newly qualified instructors can use the package to continue their education after the Instructor Examination. Experienced SSI instructors can join to broaden their qualifications and develop their teaching skills.
